Fake addresses for school enrollment could lead to criminal charges

If you use a fake address to put your child into another school, you run the risk of being charged with a crime.  The Broward County School District is going to start using private investigators if parents do not provide address documentation after being notified by letter. Broward School Board Policy 5.1 tracks the language from Florida Statutes and reads: anyone who knowingly makes a false statement in writing with intent to mislead a public servant in the performance of his or her official duty, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree (F.S. 837.06) punishable by up to sixty days in jail or is guilty of perjury by false written declaration, a felony of the third degree (F.S. 92.525) punishable by up to five years in prison. It remains to be seen what crime the school board will refer for prosecution.

If you or someone you know is charged with a crime, contact Fort Lauderdale Criminal Attorney Gary Cole.
